As far as indie acts go, Scribe is definitely one you want to see live. In addition, they brought out plates and plates of delicious food, ranging from different fresh garden salads to unforgettable fried eggplant. Our group raved about every wine that was served. It’s a nice setting to enjoy delicious food and great wine. Scribe is cool, hip, and laid back while still serving you world class wines. I’ve mentioned those makers before, but as I continue to enjoy the wine, I thought it worth repeating.Īs these photos will tell you, the low-key days at Scribe are full of all sorts of appetizing bits and pieces. I’ve grown fond of labels like Tallulah and Tournesol with a little exploration and guidance from Doug White’s Behind the Label wine tour. Over my past few visits to Napa and Sonoma, I’ve found some nice little independent producers that are worth checking out. Much of the Scribe production sells out, so joining the SVS is a smart move even if you don’t end up dining at the farm. If you belong to the Scribe Viticultural Society (their wine club) you can dine with the Scribe folks when you pick-up your wine. I can assure you that it is one of the better places you will ever discover. Take your better half and visit for the weekend. If you are interested in wine and good food, do yourself a favor and visit Scribe at some point. I can say with certainty, that after extensive testing of the various Scribe wines throughout the property, it is indeed an outstanding experience. It was a tough assignment, but I’m very committed to the truth so I made the trip. To find out if my theory proved true I challenged myself to make the trip up to the two hundred acre farm to eat and drink with founder Andrew Mariani and the rest of the Scribe camp. Along the way, a 2014 Estate Chardonnay magically appeared too.My hypothesis was that the grounds of Scribe Winery in Sonoma provide an exceptional setting for an enjoyable lunch in Northern California. All were fresh and crisp and didn’t take over from the wine itself. Sungold tomatoes and little green beans with basil, mint and shallots, along with a Scribe garden salad and flowers also arrived at the table. Next up was a yummy grilled lamb polpette with green coriander and pita – nice and soft! – served with a crisp 2016 Estate Riesling. (All somewhat thwarted by my recent braces. Once seated, we were brought our first bites: almonds, olives and garden cucumbers. When we visited, the chef-in-residence was Cal Peternell of Chez Panisse.įirst off, we were greeted at check-in with our first tasting: a 2016 Rosé of pinot noir, which turned out to be my favorite wine of the day. The tastings, which cost a pretty penny at $60, include a series of light dishes made by guest chefs and the menu varies week-to-week. There are comfy sofas, and tables with benches – so be sure to specify which you want when you make your reservation (which you need to do to visit). The patio, on the other hand, is a lovely, shady place to sit on a hot summer’s afternoon. Even on a sweltering hot day, I can imagine sheltering inside from the rain on a winter’s day. Having survived the 1906 earthquake and-despite many years of neglect-it has been resurrected and revived in an entirely unique way. The Hacienda at Scribe Winery is a gorgeous grand old house at the end of a palm tree-lined driveway.
